For now we would like to focus on just a couple potential hazards for homeschoolers. First, under current law, a homeschool in Kentucky is considered a private school. This classification affords us the freedom to educate our children without the burden of unnecessary testing, certification, and reporting requirements. Should sports access legislation be brought before the legislature, we have strong concerns that the private school classification would be compromised for all homeschoolers. Secondly, there would have to be some academic reporting process established to verify that the student athlete is eligible for participation. We feel that such legislation would necessarily lead to increased regulations for all homeschoolers regardless of their participation with Kentucky athletics. We will be examining closely any legislation that would seek to reclassify homeschoolers separate from the current private school status, or that seeks to burden the homeschool families of Kentucky with unnecessary regulations.
It is therefore our prayer, that those who are supporting sports access legislation would take a careful look at the possible outcomes of such legislation. We would also encourage them to consider how much could be done to start homeschool athletic associations if they were willing to redirect their time and resources to that endeavor. Regardless of your position on this issue, you can be sure that CHEK will do everything possible to preserve our homeschool freedoms.
